CF Interview Example Questions

You've just graduated from your master's program. Congrats! Now what? It's time to start looking for your first CF-SLP job! Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, most if not all interviews are conducted via phonecall or sometimes via Zoom or other webcam type platform. If it's a phone interview, dressing up as if you are going to an in-person interview may help get you in the right mindset prior to the interview. Here are some questions that I have been asked in recent interviews:

Interview Example Questions

1. What made you decide to become an SLP?/ What interested you in the field of Speech-Language Pathology?

2. Tell me more about when you did your externship at x place? (What sort of disorders did you work with? What ages? Group and/or individual sessions?)

3. What are some traits that make you stand out as a new SLP compared to others? (What are your strengths as a clinician?)

4. What are some things you feel you would need more mentorship on from your CF mentor? (Areas that you can improve on?)

5. Do you have any experience with high profile cases and conducting IEPS with these high profile cases?

6. What are the components of a comprehensive assessment? (What is needed to determine whether a student can qualify for therapy services?).

7. Do you have any experience with different syndromes? (e.g. Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc.)

8. Tell me about a time where you had to be flexible.

9. What sort of documentation is required of you as an SLP within the school setting?

10. How do you stay organized and on top of things? (e.g. regarding IEP dates, evaluations, etc.)

11. What is your highest priority when considering a CF position? (e.g. population, location, severity of students, etc.?)

12. What questions do you have for me?**

**Some possible questions you could ask of your interviewer (if it is an SLP interviewing you).
Q: What sort of mentorship and support will I be provided with in this position?

Q: What values does your company/district prioritize?

Q: What are the most important qualities would you  like your potential employees to have?

If a recruiter is interviewing you:

Q: What does starting salary typically look like within your company? (although different settings/districts may vary on salary).

Q: The CF mentors will they typically be on-site (SLPs that already work at the site) or off-site (and if off-site, how often will they be coming in to provide direct supervision and mentorship?)

Q: What are your employee benefits?  (Do you offer 401K matching, loan forgiveness, CEU reimbursement, licensure reimbursement, what sort of professional development opportunities are offered? what insurance plans? PTO? Sick leave policy, compensation plan, etc.)
