Common questions about on-campus clinic
- What should I expect to see during my on-campus experience?
Every on-campus experience will differ, but generally this is usually the placement where your program wants to give you a crash course on what to expect for your off-campus placements. It may definitely seem a bit intimidating at first, but better to learn and roll with the punches on-campus, and then be better prepared for your off-campus placements. Does the on-campus placement fully prepare you for off-campus placements? (It depends). Your program will be giving you clients to work with, you will have a supervisor or supervisors, and a lot of documentation will be done. (At least at the program I went to).
- Am I going to be by myself?
It depends. At the program I attended I was always paired with another classmate or a residential classmate. (E.G. Me and one classmate, me and one other classmate, me and a residential (on-campus) classmate). Between me and my 3 other classmates, we shared two clients with one another, aside from one-campus classmate we shared three clients together, totaling 7 clients in total.
- What is the supervision like?
At my program, I had 3 clinical supervisors. 2 supervisors were there everyday of clinic, 1 supervisor was there once a week during clinic to supervise for our adult clients. During therapy sessions our supervisors would be in their respective offices and watching our sessions via surveillance cameras. If any problems happened, they could easily rush into the room if we needed help.
- How many clients will I have each day?
This also depends. In the program that I was in, we saw our clients twice a week aside from our adult clients which we typically saw once a week. Our therapy schedule was Monday-Thursdays and we usually had clients from 9AM-4PM roughly*
(*Although with documentation, a lot of were there from 8AM-6/7PM the first few weeks while we were adjusting to getting documentation done at a faster-pace).
- What sort of documentation will I be expected to do on a daily basis?
At the beginning of the on-campus placement, our supervisors briefly met with us to discuss each of our clients, and gave us examples of daily SOAP notes, and how long the daily notes are expected to be. Aside from daily SOAP notes, we started off by doing informal and/or formal assessments and writing up reports for those assessments for each client (except for our adult clients). Additionally, we were also expected to write end of semester progress reports for each client, in collaboration with our paired classmates.
- Will I be seeing just pediatric clients? Or both?
In my program, we saw mostly pediatric clients and we either had one or two adult clients. The pediatric clients we saw twice a week, and the adults once a week.
